January Change Agents

The Better Things in Life
For some, it’s a place to live that’s not under cardboard in a doorway. For others, it’s more ritzy—a holiday soiree thrown by some of Vancouver’s edgiest young designers. So, how fitting that the latter was taking care of the former in raising six-grand-and-change for Pivot Legal Society’s efforts for the homeless (pivotlegal.org). Called, ahem, “Homemade,” the early-December party attracted the sort of eco-friendly crowd that’s drawn to locally produced and sourced, organic, and generally mindful products and approaches . . . not to mention the kind that parties until 7 in the morning.

Women in Charge

In a patriarchal country such as Afghanistan, empowering women is a bold, courageous, and perfectly logical answer to healing a war-torn country. Canadians are helping via the program Future Generations (FG), which nurtures Afghani women to become leaders in their local villages, spread peace, and help reconstruct lives.
2. Kudos to the involvement of humanitarian and former Canadian Foreign Minister Flora MacDonald (left), and Vancouver lawyer and social justice activist Enid Marion, who arranged a November FG fundraiser. With them is Afghani Homayra Ludin Etemadi (right) who steers the project from her homeland. Check out future.org.
