Sustainability is nearing a tipping point. One indicator is the plethora of job postings jamming my inbox (more than a dozen cool sustainability positions over the summer alone). Here’s who’s hiring: universities, companies, consultancies, activist organizations, and the B.C. government. Who are they hiring? Managers, directors, policy analysts, project coordinators, planners, facilitators, trainers, communicators, research assistants, and a Chief Environmental Officer for a major Canadian bank. Still unconvinced that we are making inroads on the sustainability tipping point? Consider the focus of these jobs: public outreach and engagement, local energy planning, community economic development, youth and student involvement, urban development, ethical sourcing, sustainable building design, environmental management and sustainable industrial development. My partner calls this “salad,” but it all adds up to a big push for sustainability. Thank goodness!
