FROM GRIEF TO ACTION
Monday, May 19 at 10 pm on Knowledge Network
In this moving documentary, viewers follow the lives of four middle class Vancouver families. The parents are intelligent, loving, resourceful, and they share an unexpected tribulation – their children are addicted to heroin. As they deal with the trauma of trying to keep their addicted children alive and in treatment, the parents join together, founding a group called From Grief to Action. Knowing that the relapse rates for opiate-dependent users is 80 percent, the families live in hope – for their own children, and for others. This award-winning documentary shatters the stereotype that drug addicts come from backgrounds of poverty and that children from loving, comfortable homes are immune.

Vancouver-based filmmaker-gone-photographer Martin Prihoda shines a new light on portraiture in a collection of hyper-dramatic images that add a dimension of unreality into portraiture. Exposing moods and drama while respecting the visual and emotional facts of life, this distinct off-camera lighting captures moments you would never dream possible. Set against the backdrop of an ominous sky these images are sure to get you reflecting on the battle between light and dark, the shadow and the emerging.

"On the Fringe of the Fringe" presents: Clarity, Vancouver's Original Punk Harpist.
Clare Morgan is a mild-mannered church secretary by day. Behind Niamh – a locally fashioned Celtic harp, appropriately painted black – she is Clarity, an alternative singer-songwriter. Having stolen her voice back from the Wicked Witch of Mediocrity, she seeks to escape its clutches by soul-stirring – and sometimes foot-stomping – original music. Bring your tallest Mohawk and your blackest leather to this event. Come and hear the Celtic harp like you've never heard it before!
