On May 10, 2008 Bill Reid: Master of Haida Art opens the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art, a new public gallery in the heart of Vancouver. The gallery is located at 639 Hornby Street, the former site of the Canadian Craft Museum and just one block north of the Vancouver Art Gallery. The exhibition, curated by Dr. George MacDonald, captures the late artist’s journey using Reid’s art, stories and film. Also opening will be the semi-permanent exhibition, The Raven’s Trove: gold masterworks by Bill Reid, featuring 40 works selected by guest curator Dr. Martine Reid. Bill Reid (1920-1998) was a Haida-Canadian artist of international stature, known for his contemporary art featuring Haida mythological creatures such as The Raven and the First Men, The Spirit of Haida Gwaii and Mythic Messengers, known to Canadians from the $20 banknote, and all featured in some form in the opening exhibition. The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Art is an initiative of the Bill Reid Foundation, a charitable organization established in 1999 to preserve the art and perpetuate the legacies of Bill Reid. The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art acknowledges the generous support of The Government of Canada, the Province of BC, the City of Vancouver, The Audain Foundation for the Visual Arts in British Columbia and Founding Media Sponsor The Vancouver Sun. |
