6:30 - 7:00pm Networking Although this is a FREE event (funded by UBC Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund), we would like you to register in advance (http://www.cic.cstudies.ubc.ca/issi/evening.html). This session is jointly hosted by SIETAR BC (Society for Intercultural Education Training and Research) and the UBC Centre for Intercultural Communication. What I Learned in Class Today: Aboriginal Issues in the Classroom was developed as an undergraduate research project in the First Nations Studies Program at UBC by Karrmen Crey and Amy Perreault, who are now UBC alumni. The film documents the experiences and reflections of nine students to intentional and unintentional occurrences of racism in classrooms at UBC, with the goal of creating awareness of classroom environment issues of cultural sensitivity, and how those issues affect students' abilities to function and engage effectively in their classes. It is a part of a larger project that is intended to assist UBC and other postsecondary institutions to find ways of improving classroom discussions of culturally and politically sensitive material. Come to watch the film and participate in a discussion with Karrmen Crey and Amy Perreault. For more information: http://www.cic.cstudies.ubc.ca/issi/evening.html |
